The slave trade was not merely a crime in history; it was a collapse of the very legal and moral principle: that human beings are holders of rights, not objects of rights; that their dignity cannot be sold, and their freedom cannot be bought.

On this day, we commemorate the San Domingo Uprising of 1791, which marked a historic turning point in the resistance against slavery and established a non-negotiable principle: No human being owns another human being.

However, the abolition of slavery on paper did not eliminate all its forms in reality; the names have changed, but exploitation persists in human trafficking, forced labor, and child exploitation—and in every practice that strips a person of their freedom and turns them into a tool for profit or control

At Al-Massala International, we believe that a law that merely condemns the slavery of the past but fails to confront the slavery of today falls short of its mission.

The world has stripped away the legitimacy of one human being owning another… and it is time to eliminate every reality that permits such exploitation.
